Gogo savours her grandchild’s success

MSOGWABA – A grandmother had the best news of the new year when one of her grandchildren was among the top achievers after the announcement of the 2016 matric results.

Nothing makes a grandmother more proud than seeing her grandchildren flourish in their studies.
“I am so happy that I didn’t waste my time cooking for her and doing the household chores while she studied in preparation for the exams,” says Gogo Joana Sibiya, the grandmother of Busisiwe Sibiya from the dusty streets of Pienaar.

She says during the exams, her grandchild would rest by sleeping after school and wake up to continue studying by herself when everybody else was asleep.

Busisiwe, a former learner at Sitintile Secondary School in KaNyamazane, is one of the top-10 learners in the province. She was also among those who received an invitation for a special breakfast with the minister of education, Ms Angie Motshekga.

Gogo Sibiya describes her grandchild as a bookworm who spent most of her time reading books when other girls wandered the streets. “I knew there was something special in her even from her primary school days at Duma Primary. She continued with that attitude during her secondary school,” says Gogo Sibiya.

She tells us Busisiwe is a very polite girl who doesn’t have many friends, except at school, and adds that she is earnestly praying for her family of eight children and
21 grandchildren to be focused.

“Busisiwe sometimes woke me up to pray with her when she was facing difficulties while studying. I urge other parents and grandparents to always pray for the future of the children and allow them space to study.”

Busisiwe has already been accepted by Wits University to pursue her studies in actuarial sciences.

Her younger brother, Nhliziyo Sibiya, added that when it was study time, children in the house were not allowed to watch television nor to study in front of it, but to gather around a table in a quiet room. He said that he would follow in his sister’s steps and pursue a career of his choice when he completes his matric.
