Six learners conquer the Aqua Enduro

PRETORIA – Six maths and science pupils from schools around the province excelled in the Department of Water and Sanitation’s Aqua Enduro Competition, at the Roodeplaat Training Centre from December 5 to 9.

The learners performed exceptionally well in both the physical and mental activities during the week-long national competition, and obtained first position.

The Mpumalanga Aqua Enduro team comprised Nomonde Nyansumba and Nokwanda Madonsela from Sitintile Secondary, Warren Mnisi from Khaliphani Secondary, Sandiso Sifumba and Marvel Gumede from Mandlesive Secondary, and Austine Masuku from Highveld Secondary School.

These pupils were selected after intensive activities and interviews, which tested all their capabilities to learn about the water sector while still having fun.

The team was awarded a floating trophy for their efforts. The year-end results will be taken into consideration to determine the pupils awarded bursaries to pursue water-and-sanitation-related careers.

Aqua Enduro is the Department of Water and Sanitation’s initiative to
address the skill shortage within this sector level. It brings together grade 11 learners from various schools, from all the provinces, for a week-long event of water-and-sanitation-themed activities, sport and games.

“The idea is to engage young people in mental and physical activities that test their intellectual capabilities and stamina, while learning about the importance of water and what it entails.

“The Aqua Enduro Competition is one of the department’s efforts to address the skills shortage challenge in the country by creating a pool of ambassadors, future scientists and engineers,” explained provincial spokesperson, Mr Themba Khoza.
