Umjindi workers demand salary increment

BARBERTON – The workers have vowed not to return to work until their demands are met.

“Since the amalgamation of Umjindi Local Municipality with Mbombela Local Municipality to form the City of Mbombela, the management has been promising to adjust our salaries and job placement to be on par with those of our counterparts in Mbombela, but to date nothing has been done.

They have promised to back-pay our salaries but to date nothing has materialized. The due date to meet our demands was February 15. Today we have decided to stage a sit-in,” said Vusi Mahlalela, SAMWU chairperson.

The workers said they were waiting for Derrick Ndlovu, General Manager for the Southern District to respond to their demands.

In an internal communication issued by the City of Mbombela to the workers, part of it reads: “As per communique issued on February 1, 2017, the Department of corporate services has now finalized the compilation of the placement letters for all 2013 employees.

The distribution of letters will commence from February 16.”
Sam Jele, City of Mbombela spokesman in Umjindi said the matter was being addressed.
