The most violent provinces in South Africa

In a bid to release up-to-date statistics, the SAPS has said it would change its publication schedule, and release crime data quarterly to give a better indication of crime activity trends in the country. The latest release covers the period between April and December 2016. The rates were calculated per 100 000 population.

According to statistics, 52 murders take place in South Africa every day, this has not changed between 2015 and 2016.

In Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, 11 murders occur each day, followed by the Eastern Cape (10 murders a day) and the Western Cape (nine murders per day).

Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal

Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal consistently take up the top spot for the highest numbers of reported murders in the country. This is no surprise due to their large populations.

The Eastern Cape and the Western Cape are often at head-to-head as with each other as the second and third most violent provinces in the country. While this trend hasn’t changed in the new release, the gap between the two provinces is narrowing.

Western Cape and Eastern Cape

While Cape Town remains the most violent city in the country, the Western Cape is not South Africa’s most violent province.

Murder rate: April 2016 to December 2016 (nine months)
