Healthy Friday: Eating healthily doesn’t mean you have to eat broccoli

March is Nutrition Month and this year’s theme is “Put Your Best Fork Forward” which acts as a reminder that each bite counts.

Small, healthy changes in your diet can make a big difference – one forkful at a time.

Here’s how:

Create an eating style that includes a variety of your favourite, healthy foods

Eating healthily does not mean that you have to eat broccoli. And don’t use the fact that you don’t like broccoli as an excuse.

Practice cooking at home more and experiment with healthier ingredients

Think about fresh, healthy ingredients that you like and prepare them in scrumptious ways. The internet abounds with broccoli-less ideas.

How much we eat is as important as what we eat

Find out what the right amount of food and drink is, for you. You don’t have to eat any broccoli if you don’t want to.

If you’re trying to determine how much you should eat, it helps to have a good idea of how many calories your body needs on a daily basis. There are multiple ways to figure that out. You can keep it simple by writing down everything you currently eat and drink to get a rough estimate of your daily caloric intake. Tracking your food in apps like MyFitnessPal can also help you determine how many calories you’re eating.

You can also use a calculator, which uses the Mifflin-St. Jeor equation to determine the number of calories your body needs on a daily basis. This number is based on your age, gender, weight, resting metabolic rate, activity level, and goal.

Find activities that you enjoy and be physically active most days of the week

So you hate jogging and you don’t get why people get addicted to running. That’s not an excuse. Think about what you loved doing when you were younger. Maybe dancing, or hiking with your friends, or playing with your kids. No broccoli.

Manage your weight and health by consulting a registered dietitian nutritionist

If all the above still has you hesitating you may need professional help. That may include broccoli.
