Golden Gate Highlands Mountain Retreat

FREE ENTRY to the park is granted from 18-24 September.

Fancy experiencing silence and tranquility on top of the world with magnificent views of the Maluti Mountains as far as the eye can see?  Tucked away in the side of a mountain at 2 200m above sea level lies the Highlands Mountain Retreat in Golden Gate Highlands National Park. This gem is one of the most beautiful spots to spend a night.

The cabins for the retreat are built to blend into the surroundings and are even difficult to spot, but they certainly offer a touch of luxury in the mountains. Designed to retain warmth when it is freezing outside, and stay cool during hot spells, these units are perfect for visiting all year round. They are something out of a fairy tale when covered in snow, which presents the ideal opportunity for cuddling up next to the crackling fire inside.

Four of the eight units are ideal for couples, while the remainder each have enough space to sleep four in double beds and two single beds.  The units have indoor fireplaces and weber braais, and come with fully-equipped kitchens, en suite bathrooms and limited DStv channels.

Visitors here are likely to notice the tranquility when darkness falls. In the evenings, the sound of chirping birds is replaced by the occasional call of a jackal in the distance. On clear mornings, sunrises are quite spectacular, but one may also be met with misty mornings in the midst of rapidly changing – and often times unpredictable – weather.

Taking a walk even further up the mountain from this high vantage point via an old road leading past the units is a must: expect views well worth the somewhat strenuous climb. One is likely to find herds of black wildebeests and other game upon reaching the top.  Bird lovers can also look out for the ground woodpeckers that frequent the area around the accommodation.

Highlands Mountain Retreat offers cosy comfort in a remote location: there is no doubt that you will return again and again.

A unit for two is R1 400 while family cottages go for R2 255 per night. This excludes conservation fees. Bookings: www.sanparks.org or +27-12-428-9111
