Sugarcane truck kills a grade 4 leaner

LANGELOOP – Life of a grade 4 learner from Lomatidraai Primary school in Langeloop in the Nkomazi region was tragically cut short by a sugarcane truck on Monday after school.

According to Capt. Mzwandile Nyambi from Tonga police station, the incident occurred while the learner was trying to pull sugarcane from the moving truck. It is believed that the driver of the truck was not aware of the accident until stopped by people who informed him that he had accidentally crushed a child.

“We just want to warn parents to be on the look for their children not to come closer to sugarcane trucks as it is a common thing in several areas. A warning statement from the truck driver has been sent to the state prosecutor who will then take a way forward on the matter. However, a case of culpable homicide has been opened against the driver,” he said.
