A 28-year man is expected to appear in Mkhuhlu Magistrates Court today for a bail application.
According to a statement released by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Abednigo Mongo is allegedly a leader in one of the local churches in Hazyview as a prophet. The NPA said Mongo started communicating with his victim on social media network, he then requested her to come to church so that he could pray for her and the girl went to church thinking that she will be prayed for.
“These incidents started in August 2018, the accused and victim would meet in a place called KaMalubane at Mkhuhlu where some of the incidents took place. It is reported that the accused raped her, intimidated her and also threatened her not to tell anyone. The matter was then reported to the police,” said NPA spokesman in Mpumalanga, Monica Nyuswa in a statement.
The accused was arrested and remanded in custody after his first appearance last week pending his bail application which is scheduled for Thursday at Calcutta Magistrate Court.
